This afternoon is crystalline and perfect with a painfully blue sky. Golden-green leaves rustle in a distant breeze that hardly stirs the surface of the teas. His ice clinks against his glass, bells from another lifetime. They whisper words that he would never say to me. My spoon responds with one word, spoken softly. The sun is warm, bordering on uncomfortable; the kind of discomfort that slowly cracks the skin and sets doubt within. "Yeah?" "Yeah. You know, like, the way it makes you feel. Like what that guy said at the store: 'This is for relaxation,' and whatever. Relaxation makes people happy." More clinks from his glass, more whispers from elsewhere. He takes a sip of hibiscus and raspberries, the brightest red that shouts attention and wraps your mind up in its vibrant energy. His teeth refract in the plastic glass and ice that wink and blink at me. That far-off breeze touches us; my skirt swirls about my ankles. The tender touch of lace reminds me of another time. The breeze mixes my lavender up, and the scent makes me smile. "What's up with you? You're super dead today. Are you okay?" "Chink, tink" and wink as his glass tilts to one side and then the other. He waits for my answer. The breeze flickers across our table and all is still again. "I’m fine. My mind is just elsewhere." My half-smile like a crooked moon is interrupted by my own taste of supposed happiness. It was steaming when I dropped the tea bag in, but it has cooled now. The scent still tickles my nose and kisses me softly. There was something sweeter than just lavender in it but I forgot to look at the bag when I made it. "Okay then; whatever you say. But do you agree? Happiness and tea?" "No." |
