we conform. we're biased. we suck.16.12.10she dances in abandoned ballrooms decorated with dusty chandeliers and cobwebbed draperies. ancient hotel floorboards creak music as she sweeps over them, creating designs in the dirt. her arms paint pictures in the lukewarm air as her lips form words; songs without melodies. writing ballads through the night, she extends her legs and her dreams into the hope that one day someone might ask her name. she haunts the grand staircases and walks down faded red carpet, her eyes alight with stardom that she may never obtain. crystal baubles hang from cracked chandeliers and specks of shine glow through the layers of dust and soot that has gathered over years of lost memories and “should’ve beens”. long brown lashes kiss high elegant cheekbones as she bows to an imaginary audience that makes nobles and kings out of spiders and bugs. a swirling pirouette executed with diamond cut precision, a gracefully proffered hand that is smooth like porcelain, a fragile strength. clouds of dust stars coat the air that smells of musty books and rotten wood, but the old ballroom is her palace. transformations of the imagination occur, and the hotel becomes vibrant in flowered wallpapers and shimmering candlelight. a gentle smile pulls an upward curve out of pink frosted lips that breathe tiny clouds of frozen air, exhaling perseverance. cracked ivory keys lie still in the mahogany arms of a long silent piano. but there is music in the silence that fills the room with concertos and i-want-to-live-again that she dances to. a final step, a gracious bow with arms outstretched to receive the applause from the cracked paint walls with their torn wallpaper ball gowns. the kings and nobles that parade across the floor on spindly legs pause in their work to acknowledge the presence of the beautiful dancer. the air is still, and the performance has ended. |
