what are you doing?!30.5.10i was once proud to wear ink-stained fingers. you see, this callused hand once held a pen. in it was an ink-ocean, but the liquid was so black i could only imagine what swam inside. so i did. they said i had become filth to line the streets, good for nothing. i had become a criminal. a storyteller. they called the ink worthless. they said my words were only a great drone repeated over and over a million and one times. they told me to write of a tree which bore crinkled money as leaves and happiness as its succulent fruit. they laughed, when i gave it to them. "this never, never will be." but it is. it's right here. they did not read it. i carried the pen with me out the door. i carried that ocean but i couldn't jump in. i couldn't bring them the creatures i had seen in the black waters, so they could open their eyes and realize the waters had never been dark. last night, i looked at a tree i could see from my window. it was a proud city tree in the middle of the road, its roots ingrained in street lives while people had carved their names into its body. last night when all was still, when no cars surged forth from the mouths of the alleyways, i took a ladder outside. dawn awoke to find papers hung from the tree. they were white and flawless like a desert no one could name. they contained an emptiness i had not yet filled with the ocean. in morning's air, they would shiver and gently move like they were breathing. as if the tree was alive in more than one way. cars started to hammer out in every direction. they fluttered like birds with no wings. people crushed them with tire after tire. no one walked in the street anymore, and no one watched the road. they had no chance. the sheets lay still. that morning, the stories ran away. they left one by one, to fill the minds of people who were just waking up. they never did return to me. they couldn't find me while i was searching for the tree with leaves of money and the fruits of filthy happiness. |
