despite what it did to you.23.1.10i sought out Death again one night. looking back, i realize it was not nearly as hard as i first thought that it would be, but that tale of caution did not find my ear in those moments. i found him in a corner of a dark, dead end alley, the summer's warm breeze rustling his black robes around his bony body. he turned so fast towards me that i didn't see the movement. he smiled widely, his grey teeth in grotesquely perfect rows, dryly greeting me. i felt urgently the need to back away from him, for the second time witnessing the terrible darkness that Death exuded; but i could not move. my intention had been to see him and leave, tell of my sight of Death. but now i realized that it would not be my will that took me from this - but Death's whim alone. my careless heart beat a sudden cadence of real, terrible fear and my lungs captured my breath, afraid to release it lest the sound cause undue attention. but still, Death's gaze seemed to be steadfastly fastened to me. he stepped closer to me and bent his head low to my face, as if to read the pure terror etched upon my features. his breath, cold and heavy, descended upon my nose and mouth, and i found myself breathing it deep into my lungs, though i wanted to suffocate rather than inhale. tears sprang to my eyes and streamed down my face with the rank taste of Death's breath. i wanted to vomit the foulness from me, but i could not move, only breathing slowly against my desperate will. he placed a slender, long fingered hand on my chest and i felt my heart give one last strong beat before freezing as ice beneath Death's touch. i inhaled one sharp painful breath through my mouth before feeling my entire being simply cease to move. he held me there for a time i cannot measure, before bringing his lipless mouth close to my ear; "do not chase what you cannot understand." his voice was a deep echo against a tomb's cold walls. as the last syllable left him, he released me. i collapsed in a pathetic heap on the ground, writhing with pain as oxygen flooded my system and blood began pulsating fiercely to my numb extremities. how long i laid there curled in a fetal ball, i can never be sure, but it was most likely hours. when at last the morning's warm sun touched me and its light illuminated the world around me - only then did i find the courage to get to my feet. to my relief, Death was no where in my sight - nor were any signs at all that he had ever been near, save his words that reverberated though my mind, and that still do every night when darkness floods in to take the place of the receding light.
